How Did This Accident Occur?
Did this pickup leave the road because the driver was distracted? Or was it swerving to avoid an object in the road? Or did it have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? I’ve spent more than 30 years being involved in accident investigations, so I know the only way to answer these questions is to wait until the investigation is complete.
That investigation, by authorities or an independent third party, should provide a clear picture of what happened on County Road 174.
Investigators will work to reconstruct this crash by scrutinizing witness statements, physical evidence, data from the pickup and any available video footage. Cell phone data could show what the driver was doing at the time of the crash, but an outside expert likely will be needed if authorities suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this accident.
A forensic examination, preferably in a laboratory setting, is required to identify such a defect, but that is something most law enforcement agencies aren’t equipped to handle, in my experience.
