A preliminary accident report indicates that a westbound 2026 Ram 1500 rear-ended a 2014 Ram 1500 near exit 743A, causing the older vehicle to overturn.

The driver of the 2014 pickup, 28-year-old Garrett Nemcik, was seriously injured in the crash near Longhorn Ranch Avenue, according to the report.

A passenger in the other pickup suffered minor injuries, the report states, while the driver was charged with reckless driving.

How Did This Accident Occur?

One driver has been cited in this crash, but that doesn’t mean he is the one who caused it. Police sometimes get things wrong in their initial assessment of an accident, although I admit it doesn’t happen too often.

But what if this crash happened because the newer pickup had some sort of software glitch that disabled its lane departure warning system? Or if it had a mechanical issue that caused unexpected accelerations? You can’t blame the driver under one of those scenarios.

He may well be responsible for causing this crash, but the only way to be sure is to wait until all of the evidence is in, after a thorough investigation. That may need to include a qualified expert to check out the 2026 Ram in a laboratory setting to identify any software or mechanical issues.

The injured driver and his family deserve to know exactly what caused this crash.
