How Did This Accident Occur?
It’s not clear at this point why this truck overturned. Was it going too fast? Did its cargo shift unexpectedly? Did it have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? The only way to sort that out is to wait until the investigation is completed.
Authorities likely will start their investigation by gathering physical evidence, witness statements, data from the truck’s engine control module and any available video footage of the crash. Many fleet vehicles now are equipped with cameras now so we may be able to see what the driver saw and did right before the accident.
The trucking company deserves some scrutiny as well to determine if it properly trained the driver and kept his truck in good working order.
An independent expert likely will be needed to examine the truck if a mechanical issue is suspected, because in my experience most law enforcement agencies don’t have the requisite training for that kind of inspection.
A thorough investigation should provide answers to any lingering questions that the driver’s family has about this crash.
