How Did This Accident Occur?

When a pickup veers off the road without any other vehicles being involved, it’s natural to attribute the crash to driver error or fatigue, but I’ve been involved in enough accident investigations to know there is often more to a crash than first reported. What if another vehicle forced the Toyota off the road? What if the pickup had an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism? What if the driver had a medical emergency before the crash?

Each of those scenarios likely would change how people look at this accident, so it is important for investigators, either police or an independent third party, to consider every possible cause for this crash as the go over witness statements, evidence from the scene, data from the pickup’s engine control module and any available video footage. Outside experts likely will be needed if the investigation indicates a medical or mechanical issue contributed to the crash, because in my experience most law enforcement agencies don’t have that kind of expertise.

The injured man and his family deserve to know as much as possible about what happened on Westmoreland Road.
