Accident Report
Bastrop County, TX — July 6, 2026, Evonne Winter was killed in an alleged drunk driver accident at about 11:45 a.m. on State Highway 71 near Smithville.
A preliminary accident report indicates that a 2019 Toyota 4Runner was heading west on eastbound S.H. 71 when it collided head-on with a 2014 Kia Cadenza.
Kia driver Evonne Winter, 55, died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to the report.
The Toyota driver, who was listed as possibly injured, was charged with intoxication manslaughter after the crash, the report states.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Bastrop County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
This crash likely will be investigated like any other fatality accident, but authorities should look beyond the scene of the collision if blood tests confirm the Toyota driver was intoxicated. They should try to figure out where he had been drinking before the crash.
That matters because under Texas law alcohol providers can share responsibility for injuries caused by drunk drivers who were served while obviously intoxicated.
