Kent County, TX — August 8, 2024, Ethan Mackay was killed as the result of a workplace accident that took place off of County Road 179.
Authorities said in a preliminary investigation summary that the work site was located off the corner of C.R. 179 and C.R. 119 just west of town.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration did not provide specifics about the accident. They said that 21-year-old Ethan Mackay died on the job due to heat stroke.
OSHA did not list any alleged violations or fines. No further information about the accident is available at this time.

It has always bothered me how little attention work fatalities get in the news. People are out working hard trying to provide for their families, yet when they don’t make it home, it’s like everyone just assumes OSHA is going to take care of everything. That’s not really how things work.
I’ve been handling fatal work accident cases for over 30 years now. The harsh reality is that OSHA is not here to provide for the needs of a worker’s loved ones. They’re here to look for violations and recommend fines. When it comes to getting a family answers and a just resolution, that usually comes from the families themselves looking for tools and experienced allies who can help them navigate the legal maze that is Texas work fatality law. The sooner they take those steps, the better their chances of getting a resolution that’s fair to them.
So, as little information as there is available about this accident, it would be at all surprising if thorough independent investigations revealed all kinds of important details.
