Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Investigators had a few early theories about this unfortunate accident. Wet roads in the area were mentioned, as was the possibility that the victims weren’t from the area and may have gotten confused.
Maybe they already hit the nail on the head, but I hope they plan to investigate carefully and consider a wider array of potential factors. Vehicle defects, medical emergencies, traffic patterns, distraction, impairment, and many other possibilities all deserve due attention to make sure the whole story is learned. Looking closer will probably rule most of them out, but it could also uncover important details that change how the accident is understood—and potentially who should be held responsible for it.
In the end I’m saying more or less the same thing I often do: Preliminary theories are fine as long as investigators don’t focus on them to the exclusion of everything else, but thorough investigation and the evidence it uncovers should tell the final story. The people harmed by the Houston accident deserve clear answers, so I hope before all is said and done that authorities deliver some.
