Investigators said that the accident happened just east of North Town East Boulevard. It appears that 44-year-old Erick Delcampo was in a vehicle going eastbound along US Highway 80. For reasons not clear right now, that vehicle and another crossed paths and crashed.

Erick Delcampo died as a result of the crash. The other driver was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries. Right now, additional details are unavailable.

How Did This Accident Occur?

There isn’t much information in the news about the crash itself. When vehicles going the same direction collide this early in the morning, investigators tend to look into unsafe speeds, distraction, alcohol, and fatigue first. Those all can have their own complex issues to address—especially alcohol, if it turns out a local bar unlawfully over-served someone and bears responsibility for the crash. However, my concern is if authorities are equally focused on investigating less common possible factors.

Too often, I come across official accident investigations where the only factors getting any attention are the most common ones. Meanwhile, things like vehicle defects, road conditions, signage and lighting, and other possibilities get brushed aside. Likely or not, families need to know they’re getting the full story. That’s especially true when their loved one isn’t around to tell their side of the story.

So, if authorities here can show they’re being thorough and fair, that’s good. But if it seems like they’re working too fast, too shallow, or just not treating the crash as a high priority, their work might need a second set of eyes looking things over.
