Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With single-vehicle wrecks, it’s important to know that authorities are being fair in their investigations. These incidents are often treated like a low priority, and that can lead to incomplete or hasty investigations.

For example, it could help to ask if authorities looked at the nearby homes for any potential security camera footage of the crash. These days, a lot of people have security cameras or doorbell cameras, and they can capture crucial evidence of a serious accident. But that evidence is time sensitive, so if authorities don’t move quickly to preserve it, it can be lost.

While it wouldn’t immediately discredit a police investigation if authorities overlooked video evidence, it’s sometimes a canary in the coal mine. In my experience, if authorities are overlooking one important factor, they might be overlooking others, too. It would only be reasonable, then, for someone to see that and decide they’d rather have more thorough independent investigators look at their situation.
