Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I talk about single-vehicle accidents, I always stress the importance of looking into unusual possible factors. Was there a mechanical defect? Did another driver hit and run? Was there something in the road? Does this stretch of road lack signage or lighting? Did a tire blowout? Generally, people are open minded to these possibilities. But they hear the victim was a motorcyclist, and all of that goes out the window. They just assume the driver must have been doing something reckless despite not having any evidence to support that conclusion.
Simply put, it’s important for a crash like this to get attention from experienced accident reconstructionists. If authorities are too quick to move on to other priorities, or if they aren’t able to set aside whatever bias they may have, they could miss something important. Ultimately, it’s possible nothing out of the ordinary led to this crash. But so long as there’s a family out there in need of answers, steps should be taken to ensure that no possibility, however likely or unlikely, goes overlooked.
