Fort Bend County, TX — February 22, 2024, Emmanuel Lopez was killed as the result of a work accident around 10:00 p.m. along Ladonia Street.

Emergency responders were called to the area south of Houston off the corner of Ladonia Street and Highway 6.

Authorities said that 27-year-old Emmanuel Lopez was with a co-worker riding in the back of a truck. OSHA officials say a piece of lumber in the truck with them hit a stationary object, pushing the lumber into the two workers. Emmanuel Lopez was thrown from the back of the truck, and he sustained fatal injuries as a result. The other worker had unspecified injuries.

In their statements, OSHA listed two alleged serious violation citations. Additional details are unconfirmed.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

As shocking as these details are, Texas has uniquely challenging work fatality accident laws. OSHA could list all kinds of alleged violations, and that likely wouldn’t make things anymore open-and-shut for a family. The reality is getting a fair resolution for workers’ families typically requires navigating a complex legal maze. Doing that requires a lot of evidence and legal tools. That’s why it’s important families have these things as early as possible to help ensure they get a just conclusion.
