How Did This Accident Occur?

Initial reports say an SUV crashed after hitting a pothole, but in my experience that is a factor in this accident, not the cause. Did the driver have a chance to avoid the obstacle? Did the Ford overturn because the driver tried to swerve, or because a manufacturing defect affected its stability?

Investigators should consider these questions as they work to reconstruct this crash, using physical evidence, witness statements, data from the SUV’s engine control module and any available video to piece together what happened on S.H. 31. Cell phone records could show if the drive was distracted at the time.

If investigators believe a mechanical problem contributed to this crash, an outside expert likely will be needed for a forensic examination of the vehicle. Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training for such inspections, in my experience, but the injured driver and her family deserve to know as much as possible about this crash.
