How Did This Accident Occur?
Over the last thirty years in which I’ve been analyzing car accidents, I seem to have developed somewhat of a pet peeve. I find it annoying when the cause of an accident is listed as “failure to safely maintain lane of travel”. Why? Because that is not a cause; it is a symptom. It will be up to investigators to figure out what caused the lane deviation.
I’m sure many will be quick to point fingers at the driver, but I’m not one to jump to conclusions. I’ve seen plenty of cases over the years in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. What if, for example, the Nissan was dealing with an issue with the steering mechanism? An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to bring to light any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might otherwise have flown under the radar.
Keep in mind that inspections like this—done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting—are not routinely done, so a special request might have to be made. If the authorities still don’t take that step, then a third party investigation can always be called upon to do so, instead. That way all the bases are covered. After all, the victim deserves a clear and detailed understanding as to how and why the accident occurred. That kind of clarity can’t be provided by surface-level investigation.
