Accident Report

March 16, 2026, Lance Estervig was killed and a teen was hurt in a dump truck accident at approximately 12:00 noon along State Highway 74.

According to authorities, 54-year-old Lance Estervig and a 17-year-old girl were traveling in an eastbound Jeep Grand Cherokee on S.H. 74 near the New River Road intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Jeep was rear-ended by a dump truck. The collision caused the dump truck to veer off of the roadway and overturn onto its right side. The Jeep went into a spin and was involved in a collision with a westbound Ford Expedition.

Estervig—who had reportedly sustained fatal injuries over the course of the accident—was declared deceased at the scene. The teen from the Jeep suffered critical injuries, as well, according to reports. She was transported to an area medical facility by EMS in order to receive immediate treatment. The truck driver was not hurt, but another driver received minor injuries and was also transported for care.

Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

I’m sure the authorities will have their hands full with sifting through the evidence at the scene of the accident. However, I do hope that they don’t get so focused on what happened at the scene of the accident that they fail to look into the things that may have played a part before the wreck even occurred. I’ve been analyzing truck accidents for over three decades. In that time, I’ve learned that decisions made days and even weeks before an wreck actually happens can have played a significant role.

To be clear, I don’t know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. What I want to know is whether or not the company with which the dump truck is affiliated abides by the many rules and regulations in place for commercial vehicles. Do they follow safe hiring standards? Is proper training for their drivers implemented? Do they plan an appropriate amount of brake time into delivery schedules in order to avoid fatigued driving? And what about their vehicles? Do they maintain scheduled inspections and follow up on scheduled maintenance so that their trucks are safe to be on the roads? Hopefully they are not cutting corners just to save time and money.

Let me know in a comment whether or not you would like to know these things, as well. One thing is for sure, the people who were affected by this dump truck accident—the injured victims and their loved ones—deserve to know the answers to these questions. After all, it’s possible that if different decisions had been made prior to the wreck, then the collision could have been avoided entirely. If that’s the case, then everyone who bears a portion of responsibility for this wreck should be held accountable.
