How Did This Accident Occur?

When two vehicles crash at an intersection, typically only one of them had the right of way. But which one in this instance? Authorities shouldn’t have much trouble sorting that out after they gather physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video footage of the crash, but that may not enough to tell us why this accident happened.

Was one of the drivers distracted, maybe by a cell phone? Did one of them have a medical emergency? Was there a mechanical issue that affected one vehicle’s brakes or steering mechanism? These questions can be answered by some additional investigation, but authorities may not be able to handle it all, in my experience.

Police can request cell phone records, which could show what these drivers were doing right before the crash, but I have yet to meet a police investigator who can diagnose a medical problem. The same goes for the expertise needed to conduct a forensic examination of the vehicles. That is best if done in a laboratory setting, not a police garage.

A thorough investigation should provide answers to any lingering questions facing the family that is grieving this accident.
