Lewiston, ID — December 13, 2025, Douglas Petersen was killed due to a U-Haul explosion accident around 7:15 a.m. off Nez Perce Drive.
Investigators said that the incident happened in a parking lot near the Courtyard Hotel off Nez Perce and 21st Street.
According to initial reports about the incident, 61-year-old Douglas Petersen was in a U-Haul loaded with cargo in the parking lot. The truck reportedly traveled a short distance when, authorities believe, a propane tank in the truck exploded. Douglas Peterson died as a result.

In the news, I saw reports say that an official believed it might be “impossible to know” what led to the accident. In my years of experience, there isn’t an accident so complex that no professional investigators can get answers. It’s a matter of time, tools, and motivation. So if authorities are indeed calling this, “impossible to know,” I have to wonder if that’s a lack of knowledge or rather a lack of motivation.
