Accident Report
Houston, TX — May 23, 2026, Desiree Sanchez-Harvey was killed in a single-vehicle accident at about 10 p.m. in the 9400 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Authorities said a southbound 2017 Chevrolet Malibu left the road near Lakefield Drive and crashed into a concrete bollard, a chain link fence and a tree before catching fire.
Driver Desiree Sanchez-Harvey, 34, died after being transported to a nearby hospital, according to authorities.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Harris County crash at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
After a single-car crash at this time of night, it’s natural to wonder if the driver was distracted, fatigued or even impaired. But after more than 30 years of working on accident investigations, I’ve learned it’s best not to reach any conclusions until all of the facts are in at the end of the investigation.
Authorities will scrutinize physical evidence, witness statements, data from the Chevrolet’s engine control module and any available video footage as they work to reconstruct this accident. Cell phone records could show if the driver was distracted at the time, but investigators likely will have to involve an outside expert if they suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this crash.
Most police departments don’t have the time or training to conduct the kind of forensic examination needed to diagnose a problem with the Chevrolet before it is scrapped or repaired in my experience, so an independent expert likely will be needed to check out the car in a laboratory setting.
