Accident Report

July 2, 2026, Deshawn Jenkins was injured due to a single-car accident shortly before 9:30 p.m. along State Highway 288.

According to authorities, 49-year-old Deshawn Jenkins was traveling in a southbound Lexus LS on S.H. 288 in the vicinity just north of County Road 60 when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Lexus failed to safely maintain its lane of travel. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently struck the center median barrier.

Jenkins reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

When it comes to single-car accidents that involve lane deviation like this one did, many folks are quick to point the finger at the person who had been behind the wheel. While driver error is a distinct possibility, I’m not so eager to settle on that conclusion without more information. Why? Because in the three decades in which I’ve had this career I have seen plenty of similar cases in which thorough investigation managed to uncover evidence of less likely causes.

To be clear, I’m not saying I have more details about this accident than are already publicly available. Driver error—whether it was due to distraction, fatigue, impairment, et cetera—remains on the table as a possible cause, as far as I know. However, what if the Lexus’s lane deviation was caused by something gone wrong with the vehicle itself, hypothetically? Could it have been dealing with steering mechanism issues, for example? Or maybe it had a tire blowout? Just because these scenarios are unlikely does not mean they should automatically be ruled out without even being given proper consideration.

An in-depth vehicle inspection done by trained professionals in a laboratory setting would be able to shed light on any mechanical malfunctions or product defects that played a role in the wreck which might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Hopefully the investigators—whether the authorities or, if need be, a third party—get one done. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve more than just the vague assumptions that often result from surface-level investigation.
