Right now, the exact cause of the crash has yet to be confirmed. However, it would be highly unusual if this happened for any reason besides drunk driving.

Simply put, the vast majority of wrong-way accidents involve not just drunk drivers but extremely drunk drivers. Imagine just how out of their right state of mind a driver has to be not to realize they’re going the wrong way down a service road, up an exit ramp, past a bunch of “Do Not Enter” signs, and into oncoming headlights without pulling over or turning around. For that reason, it’s important to know where the wrong way driver was coming from, as someone who is that drunk usually had help from a negligent alcohol provider.

At 2:00 a.m. on a Sunday, crashes are very likely to involve a complicit bar, since that’s the prime hour for drunk drivers to be out on the road. Simply put, I’ve handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers, many of which served someone to the point they drove into oncoming traffic. Establishments willing to break the law that egregiously are likely breaking all kinds of laws. So not only does there need to be accountability for all of this, not only do the families involved here deserve a chance to confront those who may have wronged them, but there may also be a local alcohol provider putting the community in danger who needs to face consequences before their actions get anyone else killed. It would be disappointing if all that slipped through the cracks because folks thought all of this was over just because the wrong-way driver isn’t around to face any charges. There could still be more to this story.
