After any serious wreck, it’s important investigations are thorough enough that even unusual possible factors get the attention they need. With single-vehicle accidents, though, authorities are sometimes too quick to jump to conclusions. This can result in serious oversights.
For example, did authorities examine the victim’s vehicle thoroughly? After any crash, it’s important to verify that all the safety features worked properly. Otherwise, a serious defect might slip through the cracks.
I recall one accident I discussed with a colleague from a while back where a woman was seriously injured after a crash with a truck. Authorities felt the facts of the crash were open-and-shut, so they moved on. However, further investigations showed the woman’s injuries were too severe given the relatively low speed of the crash. A closer inspection from independent professionals revealed she had a defective airbag. Had the airbag worked properly, the woman likely would have been fine. Instead, she was seriously injured due to a vehicle defect she didn’t even know about.
I’m not saying that happened here or even that it’s common. It’s just that vehicle defects can act as a sort of canary in the coal mine. If authorities haven’t even taken the time to rule out potential mechanical issues, who knows what else they may have overlooked?
