How Did This Accident Occur?
When vehicles going the same direction collide, the first assumption is typically that a driver was going too fast or was looking at their phone while driving. Those are certainly common factors, and those are some of the first things I look into, as well. However, a proper investigation should cover all possible factors, and people should avoid jumping to conclusions until all the facts are clear.
For example, are authorities inspecting the vehicles for possible defects? Something like brake failure or a glitch with an automatic crash avoidance system could lead to a crash like this. Ruling out those kinds of defects usually requires experienced specialists using particular tools. If authorities don’t have those resources, and they don’t bring in independent inspectors to pick up the slack, they might not be able to properly rule out a possible mechanical issue.
That’s why even seemingly straight-forward crashes can end up in the hands of independent investigators. A lot of victims and families reasonably want to be sure their situation is getting as thorough an investigation as possible. If authorities can’t assure them that nothing is being overlooked, they’ll naturally consider other options for getting answers. It wouldn’t be at all unusual for something like that to happen here.
