UPDATE (September 20, 2024): I haven’t been able to confirm any new information about this accident. My hope is investigations have been thorough behind the scenes so the family at least knows they’re getting the whole story. I think of all the times families have called me with reports that left them all but empty-handed. It’s not something anyone should have to go through, but it’s a hurdle that can be overcome with thorough independent investigations.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
To be clear up front, I know nothing about this crash beyond what’s already public. That said, there is often a concern with accidents involving police officers. People sometimes look at details skeptically when the source of that information might be authorities investigating “one of their own.” I have no reason to believe there is anything misleading about these current details, but I also think it would be entirely reasonable for a family affected by a situation like this to feel the need for an independent investigation. Whether such an investigation confirms what police know or reveals information they overlooked or left out, the important thing is ensuring a victim’s loved ones know they’re getting the whole story.
