Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It’s both puzzling and frustrating to learn of these accidents where a driver bails out on their own passenger—presumably someone they know and like—and literally runs away from responsibility. If there’s a silver lining at all to those wrecks, it’s that the driver generally leaves their vehicle at the scene. That gives investigators a lot to work with; even if the car’s paper trail doesn’t lead right back to the suspect, there’s a strong chance the SUV’s owner knows who the last person at the wheel was. If it was stolen things might not quite so smoothly, but if authorities stay diligent and the community keeps its eyes open, I have every confidence a suspect will soon be in custody.
That’s not the only part of this accident that needs more careful consideration, though; there’s also the matter of the commercial trailer that was apparently parked along the side of the roadway. Images of Pershing Street show it’s a “lane-and-a-half,” where vehicles park against the curb up and down the roadway. However, there are still some important questions to ask about the trailer that was apparently stopped there: Why was it stopped on the roadside? Was it attached to a truck, or freestanding? How long had it been there? Was its owner with it, or was it unoccupied? Was it legally parked per city ordinance?
Altogether it seems pretty clear that investigators have their work cut out for them. There’s a runaway driver to locate (and their motive to figure out) and a commercial trailer to look into, among other details that need clarification. Depending on what is learned, several parties may have consequences to face for their contribution to the end of a man’s life. His loved ones deserve no less.
