How Did This Accident Occur?
It may be tempting to mark this down as a case of driver error, but I’ve learned not to jump to any conclusions until all of the facts are available.
We don’t know if the Dodge was stopped, moving or pulling away from the curb at the time of the crash. What if the Mustang was subject to a manufacturer’s recall that caused unexpected acceleration or had a mechanical malfunction that affected its brakes? Such issues wouldn’t be obvious from just looking at the wrecked vehicle, so investigators should perform a forensic examination to determine if the car was operating properly at the time of the crash. If police don’t have the time or training for that kind of review, an independent investigation may be warranted.
