How Did This Accident Occur?

With any car accident, there will be common concerns for things like distracted driving, unsafe speeds, following too closely, and fatigue. Alcohol is also common at this time of day. But a proper investigation should also be able to consider less common possible factors. For instance, potential vehicle defects can unexpectedly cause loss of control, which can easily lead to a crash like this.

One valuable piece of the puzzle investigators can look into to investigate this is vehicle data. Most vehicles have Engine Control Modules (or ECMs) which can show speeds, steering, and braking leading up to a crash. This can help determine the exact behavior of the vehicles in the moments leading up to the collision so investigators can see if anything unusual occurred. Too often, though, I see authorities overlook this data, allowing vehicles to be towed off to all different places without preserving any evidence.

I’d certainly hope to find out that authorities here have been more careful to examine all crucial evidence. However, it’s generally best that victims and families directly confirm that someone is working to get them the whole story.
