Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After any car accident, people want to be sure their investigations are being handled properly. Sometimes authorities can take care of everything, but they have a lot to handle. Things can easily slip through the cracks. It can help to ask some key questions early on then:
- Is the crash being handled by dedicated officer whose attention isn’t divided?
- Are the vehicles being inspected for potential defects?
- Is electronic evidence being preserved (cellphones, vehicle data, camera footage, GPS data, etc.)?
In my experience, when authorities have a good handle on things, they give clear, convincing answers that will reassure victims and families. But if their answers leave doubts or aren’t adding up, steps can be taken to put the crash in the hands of more dedicated investigators.
