Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When it comes to single-vehicle wrecks, I have a lot of folks call me with concerns about how authorities are handling things. Frankly, single-vehicle wrecks aren’t always seen as a high priority. I’ve had plenty of situations where further independent investigations showed authorities missed something important or got something wrong. For example, I had a case not that long ago where authorities actually blamed someone for not wearing a seatbelt, but it turned out the seatbelt was actually defective. That may never have come to light had the victim’s loved ones not sought out a second opinion.

That said, authorities can absolutely conduct thorough, proper investigations. It’s just that people don’t generally know that’s what they’re getting until weeks or months later. So, it can be helpful to be proactive and follow up with authorities. If they provide answers that make sense and alleviate doubts, then they’re likely doing a good job. But if families feel the answers aren’t clear or that things aren’t adding up, it’s reasonable that they would want to find independent investigators who can clear things up.
