A preliminary accident report indicates that a 2016 Nissan Rogue was heading east on the access road for Interstate 820 when it crashed into a retaining wall near Riverside Drive.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s natural to assume a single-vehicle crash like this was caused by driver error, but what if another vehicle forced the Nissan out of its lane? What if the SUV swerved to avoid an object in the road? What if a mechanical issue affected the Nissan’s steering or brakes?

I’m not saying one of these scenarios is what happened on NE Loop 820, but I’ve seen possibilities like this play out in crashes that I’ve been a part of investigating during my 30-plus-year career, so I expect authorities to consider all possible causes of this crash in their investigation. They should study evidence from the scene, data from the SUV’s engine control module and any available video footage to piece together what happened.
