Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

People sometimes make the mistake of thinking that what they see in preliminary reports is essentially all there is to know, but frankly they rarely have all a crash’s important details. The wreck above is an obvious example: Folks may quickly decide that a single-vehicle accident—particularly one involving a motorcycle—was the operator’s fault somehow, but what if there’s actually more to the story? Was the bike in good repair? Was the rider in good health? What were road, weather, and visibility conditions like at the time? Was there anyone else around, even they weren’t directly involved? Could any other factors, common or uncommon, have influenced events?

I’m not saying I know more than police about what happened, but I think most would agree that investigators should do everything they can to find the whole truth—not just whatever’s “good enough.” The victim’s family deserves no less than maximum effort, so I hope before all is said and done that’s what authorities put in.
