There isn’t much information available right now, but what few details are clear already suggest this will be a very complex accident to investigate. It’s not just that commercial vehicles create chaotic accident scenes. On top of that, there are concerned parties who have a lot to lose, and they’re not likely to have the victims’ best interests in mind.

Put simply, commercial buses of this size are required on a federal level to carry at least $5 million in liability. This leaves insurance companies in a position where they want to ensure they avoid as much responsibility as possible. If there aren’t extensive steps taken to gather evidence and make sure there’s a clear picture backed up by ample facts, there may be too much wiggle room for those interested parties to muddy the waters.

That’s why, regardless of what caused the accident, there may need to be steps to get the details in the hands of independent investigators. Otherwise, rushed or haphazard investigations could result in important details slipping through the cracks, and that will only make things more challenging for the victims and families who no doubt just want as fair and as quick a resolution as possible.
