How Did This Accident Occur?
A lot of people jump to the conclusion that a single-vehicle crash must have been the result of driver error. That’s certainly common; things like distracted driving and unsafe speeds cause a lot of accidents. However, it’s always important to let the evidence speak for itself, and that requires investigations that gather as much evidence as possible.
Just hypothetically, what if some sort of defect led to the crash? Teslas, for instance, have multiple automatic driving and driving assistance features. What if there was some kind of malfunction? Likely or not, it would take a thorough inspection of the vehicle, its electronics, and its software to confirm or rule that out. Some police departments can do that, but frankly, I rarely see authorities dedicate the time or resources needed for that kind of inspection.
That’s just one example, but it can be a sort of canary in the coal mine. If authorities are taking the time to rule out that sort of complex possible factor, it can be a sign they’re taking the investigations seriously. But if authorities fail to look into that possibility, it can raise questions about what else they might be overlooking and whether the crash might be better off in the hands of independent professionals.
