Pepin County, WI — June 3, 2026, Cory Breidung was injured in a truck accident at about 1:10 p.m. on County Road D near Porcupine.

Authorities said a semi-truck owned by the Pepin County Highway Department was towing a water tanker when it went off the road and crashed at the bottom of a steep hill.

Truck driver Cory R. Breidung, 48, of Arkansaw was seriously injured in the crash, according to authorities. He was flown to an Eau Claire hospital for treatment.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Pepin County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s not clear at this point why this truck left the road. Was the driver distracted, perhaps by a cell phone? Did the tanker’s load shift, causing the driver to lose control? Did the truck have an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism? I don’t know the answer to these questions, but they are the kind of things that authorities should keep in mind as they investigate this crash.

Investigators likely will start their probe by poring over physical evidence, witness statements, data from the truck and any available video footage. Cell phone records could show what the driver was doing at the time of the crash.

If authorities suspect a mechanical problem contributed to the crash, a qualified expert will need to examine the truck in a laboratory setting. Most law enforcement agencies aren’t equipped for that kind of inspection, in my experience, but the injured driver and his family deserve a clear picture of what happened on County Road D.
