Clay County, TX — June 20, 2024, a Corpus Christi man and a woman were injured after an 18-wheeler accident at midnight along U.S. Highway 82/287.
According to initial details about the accident, it happened just west of Henrietta near mile marker 542 along the westbound lanes of the highway.
Investigators said in their statements that a 27-year-old Corpus Christi man and a 24-year-old woman were in a Hyundai Sonata going westbound along the highway. Up ahead, there was apparently a tractor-trailer stopped in the roadway without any trailer lights. As a result, the Hyundai crashed into the trailer. It appears the 18-wheeler then drove away from the scene.
The man and the woman in the car both had reportedly serious injuries.

Police did not say if they ever located the tractor-trailer. I’d hope to see that behind the scenes, authorities know more than they’ve said publicly. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t be the first time an accident like this slipped through the cracks.
I remember I had a case involving a runaway 18-wheeler. A truck forced another vehicle into oncoming traffic, caused a deadly accident, then kept driving. For months, authorities made no progress. After the family came to us, we were putting details out to the public when a couple came forward. It turned out they witnessed the crash, wrote down the truck’s information, and followed the truck. They only stopped because the truck driver saw them and literally tried to run them off the road. The couple went to the authorities with their information, but somehow the investigating officer lost track of their information with all of the other stuff he had on his plate. Fortunately, thanks to that couple’s testimony, the truck driver was identified and brought to justice.
Like I said, authorities here may be working with more information than what I’m seeing here. But if not, there may need to be more pressure to investigate how could have seen or encountered a damaged trailer on the night of the accident. There may still be vital information out there that can lead to a conclusions here.
