Investigators said in their statements that 26-year-old Connor Deveney and a 29-year-old woman were on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle going northbound on F.M. 933. While doing so, it appears a Ford F-150 going the same direction crashed into them as they slowed to make a turn. This left Deveney and the woman on the motorcycle with serious injuries.

The pickup driver reportedly left the scene, but details suggest authorities know the driver’s identity. There were recommendations for a charge of failure to stop and render aid. What remains unclear is why the driver fled.

This can make things a lot more complex than folks may realize. Drivers rarely flee out of panic. There’s usually something more they want to hide. For example, alcohol is a common reason drivers flee, and that can lead to investigations into where that alcohol came from, if the driver was illegally over-served, and if that alcohol provider is liable for the injuries caused by the accident.

A situation like that a whole lot more involved than just charging a runaway driver, and that’s that. This is why I always encourage folks to consider that the initial details we get after a serious crash may only be the tip of the iceberg.
