UPDATE (April 5, 2024): Additional reports clarify what occurred leading up to and during this accident. According to these reports, a 23-year-old man was traveling in a Mazda in the vicinity of the East 8th Street and Trinity Street intersection when police attempted a traffic stop. The Mazda reportedly fled police, turning southbound onto San Jacinto Boulevard before going eastbound on East 7th Street. The Mazda was apparently traveling at high rates of speed as it fled the police. It then collided with 26-year-old Cody Shelton and a 34-year-old man who had been crossing East 7th Street in the crosswalk at the Red River Street intersection. The Mazda fled the scene, neglecting to stop and render aid of any sort to the injured pedestrians.

UPDATE (March 18, 2024): Recent reports have been released stating that a suspect in this hit-and-run accident has been arrested and charged. The pedestrian who reportedly lost his life as a result of this hit-and-run accident has also been identified as Cody Jordon Shelton. The other pedestrian who was injured during this incident apparently remains hospitalized and in critical condition.

Austin, TX — March 12, 2024, one pedestrian was killed and another was injured in a hit-and-run car accident shortly after 1:00 a.m. along 7th Street.

According to authorities, two people were on foot in the vicinity of the 7th Street and Red River Street intersection when the accident occurred.

Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the two pedestrians were struck by an unknown vehicle. The person(s) in the vehicle allegedly fled the scene, neglecting to stop and render aid of any sort to the victims. One of the pedestrians incurred reportedly fatal injuries as a result of the accident and was declared deceased at the scene. The other victim sustained apparently critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital by emergency medical services in order to receive necessary treatment.
