A preliminary accident report indicates that a 2009 GMC Suburban was heading south when it hit a culvert and overturned south of Forest Service Road 501.
Driver Cynthia “Cindy” Diana Smith Gonzalez, a 49-year-old Groveton resident, died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to the report.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Trinity County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
It is not clear why the Suburban went off the road north of Groveton. Was the driver distracted or fatigued? Did another vehicle force the SUV into the culvert? Did the Suburban have an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism? The only was to know for sure what happened is to wait until a full investigation is completed.
Investigators will work to reconstruct this accident using evidence from the scene, data from the SUV’s engine control module any available witness statements or video footage of the crash. Cell phone records could show what the driver was doing at the time of the crash, but an independent expert may be needed if authorities suspect a mechanical defect contributed to the accident.
Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training to conduct a forensic examination of a vehicle after a crash like this, in my experience, so sometimes families have to rely on other investigators to help them find answers.
