How Did This Accident Occur?
To this day, the most common misconception I hear is that a driver who rear-ends someone is automatically at-fault for the accident. That’s simply not true. Don’t get me wrong—it is often true. Things like distracted driving and unsafe speeds are very common factors in these crashes. But what about medical emergencies? Brake failure? A front vehicle not having its lights on? Someone making an unsafe lane change and cutting off another vehicle? What if the victim’s vehicle had some kind of automatic driving feature that malfunctioned?
Likely or not, these are all possibilities that deserve closer inspections. At the very least, they can be ruled out. But if something unusual did happen, investigations need to be able to preserve that evidence and bring the truth to light. If authorities here are taking those steps, that would be good to hear. That said, it’s generally best that families follow up and make sure that’s happening. That way, if authorities come up short, steps can be taken early on to bring in more thorough independent professionals.
