How Did This Accident Occur?

Most people will look at this accident—a motorcycle crashing with no other vehicles involved—and jump to the “driver error” conclusion. To be fair, that’s a safe bet, considering that human error plays a role in the majority of car accidents. However, over the last three decades, I’ve seen plenty of cases where the investigation turns up evidence of underlying issues with the motorcycle that caused the wreck. Because of that, I’m willing to wait and see what the investigation unearths.

After all, even though motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, they are still complex machines. Any number of things could have gone wrong with the motorcycle—throttle malfunction, steering issue, tire failure, brake malfunction, et cetera—that could have contributed to the outcome of the accident.

Hopefully the authorities who are in charge of investigating are being thorough and openminded instead of betting on the most likely cause actually being behind the accident. If, for some reason, the authorities seem to be lacking on their side of things, a third party investigation can always take a look, just to make sure all the bases are covered.

In the end, as he works toward healing from his injuries, Mr. Leonard deserves to have real facts backed by solid evidence, not flimsy excuses that do little more than saddle him with possibly unmerited blame.
