How Did This Accident Occur?
A lot of people assume that single-vehicle accidents like this have to be due to driver effort. It is true that factors like distracted driving and unsafe speeds are common. However, drivers can’t always avoid crashes, and commercial truck drivers in particular can encounter challenges the rest of aren’t likely to ever deal with.
For example, did the truck experience a sudden mechanical issue? If brakes went out, if a tire blew out, if the truck’s steering column failed, or if other equipment failed and caused the truck to lose control, that’s not always foreseeable. I have seen truck accidents where a truck was well past its regular maintenance date, which could point to a negligent employer putting truck drivers in vehicles which aren’t safe because they’d rather cut costs and avoid repairs. I’ve also seen situations where a mechanical issue happened due to a manufacturing defect, which typically isn’t something truck drivers or their employers can see coming.
These possibilities take careful inspections from trained, well-equipped professionals to adequately rule out or confirm. If authorities can show they’re doing that here, that’s good news. However, I can’t remember the last time I looked into a serious commercial truck wreck where inspecting the truck for possible defects didn’t require more thorough independent investigations from professional accident reconstructionists. I don’t see any reason right now why this crash would be the exception.
