Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When two vehicles collide head-on, the question isn’t just what happened, but why one of them left its lane in the first place. That kind of sudden movement rarely occurs without an underlying cause, and finding that cause requires more than surface-level answers.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
A head-on collision demands a careful look at more than just where the vehicles ended up. Was the 2017 Ram’s path reconstructed to determine when and how it crossed the center line? Did investigators check for signs of sudden steering corrections, braking, or loss of control? These are the kinds of details that can separate a thorough investigation from one that only documents the aftermath. And while some officers are highly trained in crash reconstruction, others may lack the specialized tools needed to fully analyze a case like this.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
When a pickup suddenly drifts into oncoming traffic for “unknown reasons,” mechanical failure should always be on the table. Was there a steering system issue, a brake malfunction, or even a failure in electronic stability control? With modern trucks carrying increasingly complex systems, small malfunctions can have major consequences. Unless the 2017 Ram was closely inspected, there’s no way to know whether the driver lost control because of a defect rather than an error.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Both trucks involved were equipped with onboard data systems that could record speed, braking, steering angle, and throttle position leading up to the crash. Did investigators pull that data to see whether the 2017 Ram’s movements matched the driver’s inputs? Beyond the trucks themselves, phone records, GPS history, or even nearby traffic cameras could shed light on what happened in the final moments. Without that information, a large piece of the picture remains missing.
Clarity in a case like this doesn’t come from assumptions—it comes from looking at every angle. The deeper the investigation, the closer we get to understanding what set these events in motion.
Key Takeaways:
- A head-on collision requires full reconstruction of the lane departure, not just scene notes.
- Mechanical failures in steering or braking could explain a sudden loss of control.
- Vehicle data, phones, and cameras can provide crucial details about the drivers’ actions.
