Accident Report
Olivia, NC — June 5, 2026, a child was killed and two other people were injured in a truck accident at about 3:30 p.m. on State Route 87.
Authorities said a northbound 2017 International semi-truck crashed into a 2026 Hyundai Palisade that was stopped at a red light at the intersection with Olivia Road. The impact pushed the SUV through the intersection, into a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe that was facing south in the left turn lane.
An 8-year-old boy in the backseat of the Hyundai was pronounced dead at the scene of the Barbecue Township crash, according to authorities. The driver and a 9-year-old girl were flown to a Chapel Hill hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The three people in the Chevrolet suffered minor injuries, authorities said.
The truck driver, a 63-year-old Indiana man, was jailed on a misdemeanor charge of death by motor vehicle, according to authorities.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Harnett County crash at this time.

Initial reports say a semi-truck crashed into an SUV stopped a red light on State Route 87, but at this point we don’t know why. Was the truck driver distracted? Did the SUV have working brake lights? Did the truck have an issue with its brakes? These are the kind of questions that authorities must consider as they work to reconstruct this accident.
Investigators likely will start by gathering physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video footage. Cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time.
If investigators suspect a mechanical problem contributed to this crash, a qualified expert likely will be needed to conduct a forensic examination of the vehicles.
