How Did This Accident Occur?
This reads like an unavoidable accident, but I hope authorities will investigate this crash thoroughly to determine if there was anything that the truck driver could have done to prevent it.
Was the area of the crash well lit? Did the bicyclist fall on the road or on the shoulder? Did the truck driver try to stop before the collision? Did the truck have an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism?
Investigators should be able to answer these questions after poring over physical evidence, witness statements, data from the truck’s engine control module and any available video footage. Cell phone records could show what the truck driver was doing at the time, but a forensic examination likely will be needed if authorities suspect a mechanical problem contributed to the crash.
