Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With a single-vehicle wreck like this, it’s important folks avoid jumping to conclusions when not all of the facts are available. There’s an unfortunate tendency for people to assume a single-vehicle accident driver must be to blame because no one else was involved in the crash. That’s not always true, and it’s important to make sure investigations are considering extenuating circumstances.

Did the vehicle have some kind of defect? Did airbags and seatbelts function properly? Were there issues with the roadway itself? Does the intersection lack proper signage or lighting? Were there other extenuating factors the police investigations may have overlooked? At the end of the day, it’s important that even less common possible factors get attention from investigators. Otherwise, something important could slip through the cracks, or a victim could end up missing an opportunity to get some much needed help.
