As straight-forward as this situation may seem, investigations can always present significant challenges. Families need to have as much evidence telling the victim’s side of the story as possible. A lot of that evidence is time-sensitive. So, if authorities take too long or aren’t thorough enough in their efforts, something important could slip through the cracks.

For example, did investigators look for nearby cameras? It’s possible the traffic light has a camera of its own, or one of the nearby businesses could have a security camera with a view of the road. A lot of drivers these days also have dashcams. This sort of video evidence often overwrites itself regularly, so it’s important authorities actively work to preserve it before that evidence is lost.

That’s just one example of important evidence investigators can preserve, of course. The point is that prompt and thorough action is necessary if families are going to get proper resolutions. Whether or not those steps have been taken here remains to be seen.
