According to officials, 78-year-old Carolyn Stayton was in a Chevy Equinox going along southwest lanes of Sidney Baker Street. A Buick Regal was going northeast. Authorities say the Buick may have failed to yield, and the vehicles collided.

Due to the accident, Carolyn Stayton had serious injuries, officials said. Other injuries weren’t confirmed. At this time, additional details are unavailable.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Authorities say this might have been a failure to yield incident, which usually happens due to inattention or cellphone use. It’s important to confirm these things and not jump to conclusions, though. It can be surprising when something that generally seems straight-forward doesn’t have clear answers. It happens more than folks may realize.

I recall one case, for example, where two drivers were accusing each other of running a light. The investigating officer was so busy that he just threw up his hands and said, “Y’all sort it out yourselves.” Well, one of the drivers brought us in, and we quickly found a nearby store with a camera that caught the incident on video. It showed the other driver running the light, and that was that.

This is why it can be helpful to follow up with authorities early and often. If it seems like they’re taking the crash seriously and giving it enough attention, that’s good. But if it seems like they’re moving on without getting the whole story, it can be a chance to bring in independent investigators to pick up the slack.
