El Paso County, TX — November 27, 2023, Carlos Sanchez was injured as the result of an 18-wheeler accident at around 11:00 a.m. along Horizon Boulevard.
Authorities said in their statements that the collision happened in the area of the intersection of Horizon Boulevard and Patti Jo Drive.

Details suggest that 38-year-old Carlos Sanchez was on a Honda motorcycle that was going northbound along Horizon Boulevard. Up ahead, authorities say an 18-wheeler was stopped, “impeding traffic” along the right travel lane with its hazard lights on. While it was there, Sanchez’s motorcycle crashed into the back end of the trailer. As a result, Sanchez had incapacitating injuries.

Authorities didn’t report any specific citations or charges here, but I can’t help wondering if any are pending. Why was this 18-wheeler in the right lane of travel? If there was some kind of mechanical emergency, was that the safest place to pull over? Otherwise, was the driver making a delivery somewhere nearby? How long were they impeding traffic? Do trucks stop along this road a lot?
Look, I’m not trying to say whether or not this was an avoidable collision, but I often have people come to me with the believe that if one vehicle is stationary in a collision, there’s no way they did anything wrong. That’s just not true. If a truck is somewhere it shouldn’t be or stops in the roadway without taking proper precautions, they can be responsible for a crash just like someone could be for making a mistake in a moving vehicle. It’s at least encouraging to see authorities describe that possibility in their initial statements, but the lack of more recent information makes me wonder if they ever gave this crash any further attention.
