How Did This Accident Occur?
In the reports from the Louisiana State Police, authorities emphasized that inattention is a common factor in accidents. They’re not wrong, considering how often cellphones contribute to accidents. My hope, though, is that investigations consider far more than just possible inattentive driving. Especially with commercial vehicles, there could be unique factors at play. Sometimes, the cause of a crash like this even tracks back to long before the driver even got behind the wheel.
For example, I just had a case not long ago where a truck driver’s employer refused to properly maintain their vehicles. They simply avoided routine maintenance, kicking the can down the road and hoping for the best. This was obviously going to get their driver or someone else hurt, but the company simply cared more about their bottom line. Inevitably, people got hurt, and we were able to secure the maintenance records to show that the accident was entirely preventable.
Maybe that isn’t what happened here, but it’s important investigations can rule out things like that. People too often think of crashes only in terms of what the driver may have done. As important as that is to an investigation, it’s really just one area of many that needs attention. So, are investigators looking at this crash from all angles? If not, then getting the whole story might require independent investigators stepping in at some point.
