San Marcos, TX — December 28, 2025, one person was killed as the result of a car accident at around 9:00 p.m. along Highway 80.

Preliminary information about the accident says that it took place at the intersection of TX-80 and River Road on the east end of town.

According to officials, two people were in an SUV traveling through the intersection. That vehicle apparently left the roadway, and it crashed into a light pole. After the crash, a passenger got out of the SUV, following which another vehicle struck the passenger.

The passenger from the SUV was killed. The SUV driver sustained unspecified injuries. Details aren’t confirmed right now, but authorities said they were looking into intoxication as a possible factor.

Frankly, it would be irresponsible not to consider alcohol after any nighttime crash. It’s a common factor that can lead to serious potential consequences for both an intoxicated driver and for any local alcohol providers who may be responsible for over-serving that driver and contributing to the accident.

That said, have authorities looked into other possible factors, as well? Speed, distraction, road hazards, medical conditions, vehicle defects, poor lighting and signage—a lot of things can contribute to a serious car crash. Without proper investigations, important evidence may slip through the cracks.

At the end of the day, a victim’s loved ones deserve to know they’re getting the full story. Either authorities can show they’ve worked diligently to gather the facts here, or they might instead show they focused so much on looking for someone to blame that they let important information slip through the cracks.
