When a serious crash like this occurs, the immediate priority is ensuring that those involved receive the medical attention they need. Once that is addressed, the focus shifts to understanding why the crash happened. While authorities have launched an investigation, experience has shown that not all crash investigations are conducted with the same level of depth. That’s why it’s important to ask three key questions to ensure all possible causes are considered.

The first question is whether authorities have conducted a thorough investigation of the crash. Law enforcement agencies typically document the scene, collect witness statements, and reconstruct the accident based on available evidence. However, the extent of these investigations can vary based on resources and departmental priorities. Given that this was a head-on collision, it’s essential to determine whether one of the drivers crossed into oncoming traffic, and if so, why. Was this due to distraction, impairment, or fatigue? Could an external factor such as poor visibility or road hazards have contributed? Without a meticulous review of all evidence, crucial details could be missed.

The second question that must be asked is whether anyone has considered the possibility of a vehicle defect. While many assume driver error is the primary cause of crashes, mechanical failures such as brake malfunctions, steering defects, or sudden acceleration can also play a role. In cases where no clear explanation emerges, vehicle defects must be considered. Unfortunately, unless someone takes the initiative to secure the vehicles for forensic analysis, potential mechanical issues may go undiagnosed. If the vehicles are quickly repaired or sent to salvage, valuable evidence could be lost before it is even examined.

The third critical question is whether all electronic data related to the crash has been collected. Modern vehicles are equipped with an engine control module (ECM), which records essential data such as speed, braking, and steering input leading up to the crash. This information can provide an objective look at what happened in the moments before impact. Additionally, dashcams, nearby surveillance cameras, and even cell phone records may offer further insight. Unfortunately, electronic data is often overlooked or lost if not preserved quickly, making it imperative to secure this evidence as soon as possible.

At the end of the day, determining what led to this crash isn’t just about identifying a cause—it’s about ensuring that those affected receive the answers they deserve. Serious crashes change lives in an instant, and the least we can do as a community is to ensure that every possible factor has been investigated so that those involved, and their loved ones, are not left with lingering questions.
