Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If it’s true that alcohol contributed to the accident, people don’t often what that means beyond the alleged drunk driver. However, there are areas of Texas law victims and families need to be aware of. Often, there as a negligent alcohol provider responsible for contributing to the accident, and authorities might overlook them if their investigations aren’t thorough enough.

Simply put, alcohol providers, such as bars and clubs, break the law if they serve someone who is obviously intoxicated. This can result in consequences, including criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, or liability if that person gets themselves or others hurt.

I’ve handled hundreds of cases involving negligent alcohol providers, and they rarely get the attention they should. In fact, there have been many times authorities only took action on their own because of the evidence our investigations gathered. At the end of the day, people affected by a serious accident deserve to know what possible avenues are available to them. If authorities just want to blame someone, they may not be giving those victims and families the clear paths forward they need.
